How to get your makeup bag ready for the New Year

It’s hard to believe that only four days ago we celebrated New Year’s Day.  We spent our time planning how to celebrate, what to wear and what to do. The day finally came and many of us celebrated with friends and loved ones to welcome in 2016.

We made resolutions, some silly and some serious. We made goals we would make an effort to at least work towards and really try to stick to.

On Monday, getting ready for work as you pulled out that eyeliner you meant to replace or the lipstick that never got updated, you realized, it’s time to update my makeup bag.

For my personal makeup, I keep two bags. One is for everyday and the other is for special events and occasions. I do this because there are certain eyeshadows I don’t wear on a daily basis but use them to create a more festive look when I go out.

How long should you keep your makeup?  Here are some general tips:

  • Mascara and liquid eyeliner should be replaced every 3 months. I also suggest changing sooner if your eyes become itchy or irritated.
  • Liquid foundation is good for approximately 12 months. This is provided that you don’t leave the bottles opened with the caps off sitting on your shelf. If you are one who forgets to put the cap on you risk not only the foundation drying faster, but air and dust collecting. (If your foundation separates or the color changes in the bottle, it’s time for a new one).
  • Lip gloss is good for about 6-8 months
  • Lipsticks are good for a year.
  • Powders for the most part should be replaced every 18 to 24 months. Personally I replace mine within 18 months because the powders don’t work as well if kept longer.
  • Eyeliner and Lip liner pencils- should be replaced in about 12 months. Be sure to sharpen after each use.

Keep your makeup products and containers clean. Always store in a cool, dry place.

Makeup sponges: If you use disposable makeup sponges, please use them once and throw away. Do not dip the used side into products.

If you prefer more durable sponges like beautyblender, I wash mine daily to get the makeup out and to keep it clean. (However, I only use mine for blending, not for application of product).

Wash your personal makeup brushes at least once a week. Never buy cheap brushes. Invest in good quality brushes to improve your finished makeup application.

PS…

A few products I love, you might like them too.

My experience: The Makeup Show NYC

Kit Focus Presentation

The Makeup Show Kit Focus

20130505_112217
The Makeup Show NYC is an inspiring event for any makeup industry professional. Produced by The Powder Group, created by Michael DeVellis that begin with a vision to educate and take pro-artistry to a new level. Now celebrating 10 years, this show has truly a must-attend venue for any makeup artist who wants to enhance their skills, network with other professionals and grow in their profession.

Every year I excitedly attend The Makeup Show NYC. This year was no different. It’s a 2 day event that can very easily become a week long incentive for creativity if your time and budget permits. The Makeup Show took place recently on Sunday and Monday at the Metropolitan Pavilion.

As a makeup artist there are not many events you can attend with the opportunity to listen, learn and meet makeup pro’s and industry insiders including Michael DeVellis, James Vincent, Orlando Santiago, and Crystal Wright.

Prior to attending I plan my days to get the most out of my attendance. There are seminars, presentations and business forums scheduled through each day. I always enjoy the Kit Focus presentation. This year I learned some great tips from James Vincent, Jon Hennessy and Orlando Santiago. They held a very casual conversation to the audience about key products they use and why. I have learned to find products that have multi-use capabilities and my kit has become more compact. You really do look much more professional when you’re not dragging around a heavy load of products and tools to every booking. I made sure to refill my kit today with Embroylisse Lait Crème and 12 Flash Color Case by Makeup Forever.

Next I attended Represent: Understanding the Relationship of Artist and Agent with Pati Dubroff & Booke Wall. This was a great keynote presentation. Pati Dubroff is a makeup artist who makes applying makeup look easy. Her work continues to grace red carpet events but is also seen on many major magazine covers and in beauty ads. Brooke Wall is the CEO of The Wall Group, an agency that represents many great, talented individuals who work in makeup and fashion. This presentation delivered great insight on getting your foot in the door. One important thing all artist must realize is you have to work hard to accomplish your goals. Assist as much as you can until you can book your own gigs. Once you are signed with an agency, you still have to impress each client every time or you won’t work.

Gina Brooke & Ilona Royce Smithkin

Gina Brooke and her muse, painter Ilona Royce Smithkin

Renowned makeup artist Gina Brooke gave us insight on finding inspiration. She also introduced us to her muse, Ilona Royce Smithkin a painter who resides in Manhattan. Intrigued and determine where Ms. Smithkin got her long, beautiful red eyelashes, Gina soon discovered that she made them herself from her own hair. Gina also offered great advice on elevating your career.

After this presentation I spend time visiting the many vendors that participated in the show. I stocked up on items need for my kit and re-connected with friends and peers. It was really exciting to see so many people enjoy the experience The Makeup Show NYC has to offer.

Hair Resolution – Split End Free

Are you ready to get your hair into shape?

Split ends are caused from over working your hair. The strands become weak and split. The strands separate in multiple areas leaving you with broken uneven ends.  Many believe that split ends only occur at the end of the hair however, split ends can happen throughout your hair.

Split End Causes:

Elastics and rubber bands can break and pull your hair. Try hairstyles that don’t require elastics or use snag-free elastics.

Take it easy when combing and brushing your hair. Hair is fragile. Don’t tug and pull your hair. Use a detangler and wide tooth comb to style your hair with ease. And please, do not over brush.

Chemicals can cause damage to your hair. Go Natural. Chemicals can damage your hair. It does not matter if you relax, perm, straighten or color. All of these processes contain chemicals that can cause damage to your hair. If you must chemically treat your hair, take care of your hair by using products suited for your hair type and conditioner to add moisture to your strands.

Swimming is a great form of exercise and good for your health, but the chemicals in the water are bad for your hair. Add a leave in conditioner to your hair prior to swimming. Wear a swim cap. Be sure to shampoo and condition immediately after swimming.

Hard water can cause dryness and damage to your hair. If you shower in hard water, try adding a water softening system. Your skin will love it too.

Drying and styling tools can help us to create fabulous looks, but when overused or used improperly can cause extreme damage to your hair. It is important to use drying and styling tools that help to promote healthy hair.

blow dry creams

Blow dry creams featured:  Carol’s Daughter Chocolat Smoothing Blow Dry Cream, Bumble & Bumble B.b. Straight Blow Dry, Marc Anthony True Professional bye bye Frizz Keratin Smoothing Blow Dry Cream, Ted Gibson Build It Blow Drying Agent, Bead Head TIGI Superstar Blow Dry Lotion, and Garnier Fructis Blow Dry Perfector Balm

Before you turn on your blow dryer, use a blow dry cream. The thermal protection added to these products will help in reducing some damage caused by extreme heat. If the flat iron, curling iron or straightening comb is your best friend, add another, try styling aids with heat protection. Remember, the more heat you add to your hair, the more potential damage you are causing.

Is your diet causing your hair to split? A balanced diet is the key to better health and healthy hair, skin and nails. Add water, vitamins and good for you food daily to enhance your body, health and hair.

Split End Repair:

Get your hair trimmed at least ¼”. Trimming will help to get rid of some of the split ends; it will also shape and define your style.

Use a split end sealer. Sealers help to reduce the damage and help your hair look healthier. Sealers do not reverse nor do they repair the damage. Try Carol’s Daughter Monoi Split End Sealer ($25 Sephora.com) H-2-Ion ($59.95 h2ion.com)

Use a good shampoo and conditioner for your hair type.

Stop washing your hair daily. Reduce to 3 times a week instead.

Deep condition your hair at least twice a month.

Towel dry your hair whenever possible. Don’t rub, instead gently squeeze the excess water out of your hair.

Look forward to reduced split ends and a healthier head of hair.

Giorgio Armani Lip Maestro

Ring in the New Year with lips that POP

2012 beauty and fashion designers introduced us to vast  array of exciting color from daring to neutral and bold to beautiful.  I loved many of the color launches this year.  This was the year of the lip, soft, sassy and sexy.

“Whenever a female takes a strong stand for herself, the  majority of the time they have to really, really narrow it down to being  feminine and wearing dresses and just being lipstick chic. -Michelle Rodriguez”

Here are the lip color launches that topped my list:

Sisley Phyto-Lipgloss

credit: Sisley Cosmetics

Sisley Phyto Lipgloss ($55) launched in October. These fabulous glosses add a great kick of shine. They glosses glide on smooth, feel luxurious with 7 color choices. What I love the most about Sisley Phyto Lipgloss is they are not sticky and contain moisturizer to soften and nourish your lips.

Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet

Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Lipstick ($32.50) – Chanel finally introduced a collection of matte lipsticks. I’m a fan of Chanel makeup. Their products are simply beautiful. My favorite feature of this lip collection is they are matte but are not dry and the colors have great pigment.  Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Lipstick really wears well. This collection is in 11 gorgeous shades. I am complimented every time I wear this lipstick in L’Impatiente, a rich, deep plum color.

Benefit Ultra Plush Lipgloss

Benefit Ultra Plush Lip Glosses ($16) – If you love Benefit Powders, you will certainly love these glosses. Never tried Benefit makeup? What are you waiting for? Benefit Ultra Plush Lip Gloss is available in 6 sensational shades from Dallas to Sugarbomb with high shine, great color and ease of application.
